Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and Waterford City and County Council have shared the view that the N25 must be placed on the National Development Plan given the need for significant upgrades along the route.
The N25, which connects Waterford to Cork and Wexford has seen a significant number of fatal accidents in recent years and there are widespread calls for a major overhaul.
The issue was addressed at a recent meeting of Waterford Council's Dungarvan and Lismore District.
Senior Engineer for Roads with Waterford City and County Council, Gabriel Hynes, says TII and Waterford City and County Council are of the opinion that the NDP is the only way forward.
Where the N25 needs to go from the safety point of view and also from an economic and connectivity point of view for the two cities, Waterford and Cork, we need the N25 to be upgraded. We as an executive have discussed that with TII in the past. Their view is that it needs to be put on the national development plan. They have indicated to me unofficially that that needs to be driven at ministerial and government level, in that the N25 needs to be prioritised as a part of our national development plan. We as a Council certainly have the right to meet with TII annually. I have a meeting on Wednesday with TII and we'll be requesting that a delegation be sent to TII offices in Dublin in the coming months and on that agenda will be the N25. The N25 is an undivided carriageway and anywhere you've an undivided carriageway with a good number of junctions. you're going to have risks and the safer way is that you great separate those junctions.
