After a record amount of rollovers, one or more players will bag the €19 million Lotto jackpot in a must-win draw this weekend.
The jackpot has not been won on 62 successive occasions.
Premier Lotteries Ireland, which operates the National Lottery, called for a must-win draw before Christmas, when the rollover then stood at 50.
A National Lottery spokesperson said:
We know that most of our Lotto players would like to see the €19 million jackpot won, so we are delighted to be able to make this announcement.
The spokesperson added: “While this current Lotto jackpot rollover is truly unprecedented, and has generated so much excitement and participation in the Lotto game, the National Lottery is now pleased to announce that this ‘will be won’ event will take place."
The spokesperson added that the National Lottery will continue to operate the must-win policy into the future, to guarantee the rollover cannot continue for more than five draws after the capped amount has been reached.
Speaking to the Irish Times in December, when the rollover stood at 54, Professor Brien Nolan of Dublin City University described the streak as "highly improbable," adding that it represented the same chances as picking up a deck of cards and dealing a full house, or four of a kind.
