It's hoped plenty of money will be raised today for the so-called 'Field of Dreams' in Waterford.

Waterford Ladies Gaelic Football Association will be fundraising at the Tramore Races for a new dedicated pitch for their players.

A field has been purchased in Dungarvan for the development but funding is now needed.

Former inter-county player, Mary O'Donnell outlines what they'll be doing today:

"We're selling tickets and as part of the tickets, you get your entrance fee, your race card, a food voucher for any of the stalls in the marquee and there's also live entertainment there for the day.

"So, it'll be a fun day out. Tickets are €50 a head, and it's going to a great cause - to build a football pitch for the future stars and the present stars of the Waterford Ladies' association."

The project has been caught up in an ongoing dispute over planning permission for housing on land in the Duckspool area, which is still before the High Court.

However, Mary says they want to have the funds ready to go to for their new pitch:

"We want to push on, we don't want to be waiting two years to see how that goes.

"At the minute, we have the field or the site actually bought; it was bought outright in the name of the Waterford Ladies Football Association.

"So, this fundraiser will go a long way towards developing it to the next level - getting the drainage system in and trying to get a physical pitch on the site."

The Association says it is vital that they get their own grounds.

As Mary describes, it can be a struggle to find places to train at the moment:

"On any given night, you go to any GAA clubs across the county and it's full of young girls and boys training.

"It's very hard for coaches to book a field so, this field is crucial to alleviate that pressure - especially for our county's development squads and our county players so that their managements don't have to look for football pitches.

"This pitch is vital to progress the level and standard that the girls are playing at at the minute and bring it onto the next level."
