A mobile library will be coming to Waterford, following confirmation of government funding to support the project.

The project has been driven for a number of years by Labour Party Councillor, Seamus Ryan.

The library will travel to many corners of the county, following the allocation of €225,000 to support it's existence.

Cllr. Ryan said: "Our campaign for a mobile library for Waterford has finally paid off. Today, the government has provided €225,000 for the provision of a new mobile library for Waterford. I first raised this in 2019 when I proposed that the Council would apply for the new mobile library."

"Last year, I proposed that the Council would set aside €50,000 a year for four years towards the project", he explained. "Following this morning‘s announcement, it has been confirmed to me by the Director of Services at Waterford City and County Council that the project can go now go ahead. This means that areas within the county such as my own area of Kilcohan/Ballytruckle and Ballybeg will now see a new mobile service. The new unit should be in place by end of this year and will benefit everyone in Waterford City and County."

The news has also been welcomed by Waterford Green Party TD Marc O'Cathasaigh.

"Fantastic news today that Waterford City and County Libraries will receive €225,000 to provide a new Mobile Library Service for Waterford that will reach into parts of the county that never had a service before! I have to give a shout-out to Cllr. Seamus Ryan on this - he's been like a dog with a bone asking for a mobile library service for years. Not of my tribe, but credit where it's due. The work paid off in the end, Séamus."
