The vandalism of a popular Waterford City playground has been strongly condemned and labelled "mindless".

Significant damage was caused to the Farronshoneen playground in Williamstown last night (Thursday).

Wheelie bins full of rubbish were dragged onto a play space and fires were set. Damage was also caused to playground equipment.

Speaking to WLR News, local Fianna Fáil Councillor Adam Wyse said there have been ongoing issues in the area.

"We've had issues in Williamstown and in the People's Park," he said. "It's mindless vandalism."

He says measures will have to be introduced to curb such behaviour, but added that "we don't want to see CCTV being used in playgrounds".
