A new metropolitan mayor of Waterford has been elected.

The vote for Councillor Séamus Ryan's successor took place at the district AGM in City Hall yesterday evening.

There were three names in the running, with Fianna Fáil's Jason Murphy winning out over Sinn Féin's Jim Griffin, and Independent Donal Barry.

It took a second vote for Councillor Murphy to get the majority as the first vote resulted in a three-way split.

He'll now hold the title until June 2023.

Cllr. Murphy was first elected to Waterford Council in 2014 and retained his seat in 2019.

Cllr. Murphy was proposed by Cllr. Eddie Mulligan (FF) and seconded by Cllr. Joe Conway (Independent)
