A man has been charged in relation to the stabbing of a priest in Waterford.

The priest, a man in his 30s, was attacked in his residence near the hospital in Ardkeen.

The incident happened at about 9.30am yesterday morning.

The priest received stab wounds to his shoulder, neck, and head, which required hospital treatment for much of the day.

However, he was deemed fit enough to be discharged yesterday evening to continue his recovery at home.

A technical examination of the scene was completed and a statement taken from the victim.

A man in his 20s who was arrested shortly after the incident, remained in Waterford Garda Station overnight.

He has now been charged with Assault Causing Harm, under Section 3 of the Criminal Justice Act.

He's due to appear before a special sitting of Waterford District Court today.
