A major spillage in a Waterford City river is being investigated.
A large section of St. John's River turned white yesterday afternoon, prompting huge concern among members of the public.
Independent Councillor Donal Barry told WLR News he received many calls on the matter.
"This very large spillage covered nearly the entire length of St John's River from the Black Rock down to the Waterside," he explained.
"This was either a spillage or a deliberate dumping of some substance into the river and, as a result, the river turned white. I'd like to thank the public for their quick reaction by contacting both the Council and the EPA."
Cllr Barry added: "It appears to be washing out with the tide, but nevertheless the Council will sample the water and make enquiries as to how and where this occurred."
