A major new tourism proposition for Waterford is in the pipeline, according to Waterford City and County Council.

Described as a 'project of scale', it's set to replace the ambitious 'Guardian of the Déise' project which was previously mooted some years ago.

The matter was discussed at the September plenary meeting of Waterford Council when Sinn Féin's Jim Griffin sought an update on the Guardian project.

New CEO Sean McKeown said the new "iconic" attraction being planned "might no longer be the Guardian project."

"But we will certainly be developing a major tourism attraction which will pull in significant numbers," he said.

Director of Services (Economic Development) Michael Quinn said: "We've had a number of workshops with Failte Ireland and some consultants."

"We've worked out a more broad based concept and, once we've signed off the specifications, we'll be issuing an expression of interest to see who is interested in working with us. We will go through an assessment in terms of different ideas for an attraction of scale."

The 'Guardian of the Déise' project previously attracted significant interest and debate.
