The Office of Public Works (OPW) and Waterford Council have issued a flood warning for Waterford.

They are advising that there will be a period of surge on top of very high astronomical spring tides.

According to the OPW, these high astronomical spring tides are approaching Highest Astronomical Tide - or HAT - in all coastal areas.

HAT is the highest level of water that can be predicted to occur.

However, it is expected that these levels will be exceeded in many areas around the coast during this period.

Storm surge levels are predicted to significantly increase today as well.

With localised flooding expected, the council is deploying flood barriers in Waterford City and Passage East.

The following car parks in Dungarvan will also have to be closed to the public from mid-afternoon today until 8am tomorrow morning:

The council is also asking people to stay away from exposed piers, harbours and sea walls as there is a risk of wave over-topping.
