Listen: Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp are back online after global outage

Global social media giant Facebook has restored its services after a major outage that lasted for six hours.

The technical glitch also took down its WhatsApp and Instagram platforms - hitting more than three billion combined users.

The platforms confirmed on rival social media giant Twitter they were aware of issues and working to resolve them. This was  after thousands of people worldwide reported outages shortly before 5pm on Monday.

Users were eventually able to access Facebook and Instagram from late on Monday evening, while WhatsApp said its services were “back and running at 100 per cent” as of 3.30am on Tuesday. The group's, headed up by Mark Zuckerberg, is blaming a 'faulty configuration change'.

The outage came with a cost. Its falling share price wiped almost €41 billion off its value.
