Lismore's 'Santa at the Strand' event gets the green light for this year

Lismore's 'Santa at the Strand' event gets the green light for this year

A decision has been made to permit this year's Santa at the Strand event in Lismore.

The future of the event had been under significant doubt in recent months, with a march in favour of the event taking place in July of this year.

Those lodging objections against the running of the event in its current location had done so on the grounds of biodiversity, with concern raised for the safety of the species of trees in the area.

Last year, the 4 day event was attended by more than 4,000 people, with 20,000 euro donated to St. Carthage's Rest Home in Lismore and the Cappoquin Day Care Centre.

Organisers have released a statement to confirm the event will return from November 30 until December 3.

Thanks were extended by the organisers to Waterford City & County Council, together with those who supported the retention of the annual charity event.

In their statement, they said: " Everyone needs heroes in this world and Waterford City and County Council have been pivotal in helping Santa return to the Strand and for that we are very grateful.

"The TWC committee would especially like to thank the people of Lismore and the wider Waterford area, the great team in Lismore Estates, the Lismore Town Association and the many local committees and individuals who sent messages of support to those organising Santa at the Strand in recent months. Your belief in the team behind this event, in the power of community and in the magic of Santa Claus gives us great heart."
