Patrick Quirke denies murdering Bobby Ryan – a man described by the prosecution as his “love rival”.

It’s alleged to have happened sometime between June 3rd 2011 and April 30th 2013.

It is the prosecution’s case that he murdered him in an attempt to rekindle an affair he had previously with Bobby’s girlfriend Mary Lowry.

Bobby stayed with her the night before he went missing and it was the accused who found his remains in a run-off tank on her farm 22 months later.

Before asking the jurors to consider a verdict, Ms. Justice Eileen Creedon advised them not to be motivated by sympathy, anger or disgust.

She told them they’re entitled to take into account the impression a witness made on them and to ask themselves: “do I believe this witness or not?”

She told them they have to be satisfied to a level where there's “no lingering doubt” and said: “you can't come back next week and say you’ve changed your mind”.
