Former Mayor of Waterford City & County, Cllr. Joe Kelly has confirmed he won’t be running in the upcoming General Election.

Cllr. Kelly had previously signalled his intention to run for the Dáil, but has confirmed to WLR News that he no longer intends to put his name forward.

Kelly, who was first elected to the local authority in 2004, also turned down an approach from Aontú to become the party’s GE candidate in Waterford.

While appreciative of the approach and having given the prospect serious consideration - Cllr. Kelly, who is currently serving as Metropolitan District Mayor, says that following consultations with family and friends, he has taken the decision to “prioritise his current work within the community” and he “will continue to engage with people for the betterment of Waterford.”
