There's fears a controversial American Catholic preacher will give a talk to students in Waterford this week without their parents' knowledge.

Jason Evert of the Chastity Project has spoken out against contraception and says homosexuality is "disordered".

His talk at the Tower Hotel in Waterford City has been cancelled following complaints but he's still due to talk at the Holy Family Mission on Thursday.

The Catholic community in Kilsheelan was set up by the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore in 2016.

Una Dunphy of People Before Profit Waterford says Jason Evert's views are extremely harmful:

"We're going back to Handmaid's stuff here; it's very definitely the woman is there to be pure for her husband and sex is for reproductive reasons, so then gay sex doesn't exist. i think it's a horrendous, hateful type of talk to be giving to children. The Bishop can bring these people in because he owns the schools. Parents need to know what their children are being exposed to."
