Ireland's longest bridge will be officially opened in the south east this afternoon.

It is the standout feature of a new 15 kilometre dual-carriageway that will form part of the existing N25, and allow motorists travelling between Waterford City and Wexford Town avoid congestion in New Ross.

The Taoiseach will officially open the 230 million euro project this afternoon, with the first traffic expected on it at midday tomorrow.

The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge is an 887 metre structure that crosses the River Barrow between Wexford and Kilkenny and is part of the 230 million euro New Ross bypass.

It's named in honour of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy - the mother of iconic bothers John F Kennedy and Robert Kennedy and is a stone's throw from their ancestral homestead of Dunganstown.

Robert's grandaughter Rose Katherine Kennedy Townsend will attend this afternoons event with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

It's the longest bridge in Ireland with its two spans the longest post-tensioned concrete spans of their type in the world.

The new bridge will significantly reduce traffic congestion in New Ross town and will be open to traffic tomorrow.
