The National Public Health Emergency Team says Ireland will continue to monitor the situation regarding Coronavirus.

It comes after the World Health Organisation declared it as a public health emergency of international concern.

The World Health Organisation's director general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement last night, after 170 people died from coronavirus in China.

The WHO says it's made a unanimous decision to declare an international public health emergency.

The experts say it isn't because of the way China has been handling it - they insist the country's been doing all it can.

Professor Didier Houssin, chair of the emergency committee, explains why they've made their announcement.

Here in Ireland the National Public Health Emergency Team says Ireland is well positioned to detect and respond to a case of Coronavirus that might arise here.

It says the declaration was anticipated based on its ongoing assessment and as yet there have been no confirmed cases in Ireland.

It says the country will continue to monitor the situation and to participate in the international assessment of response to it, through the European Centre for disease control and the WHO.
