A full review is to be carried out into why it cost over €300,000 to build a bike shelter in Leinster House.

It recently emerged that the Office of Public Works (OPW) spent the vast sum of €335,000 on building a bike shelter which stores just 18 bikes at Leinster House.

When asked for a copy of the scoping documents involved with the project, the OPW refused to provide them due to security reasons.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has said it seems "incredibly expensive".

Minster Ryan added "I look forward to listening to the OPW and talking to the OPW as to why it was so expensive."

€322,282 was spent on the main construction and installation project, €2.952 went towards archaelogical services whilst quantity surveying services and contract administration services totalled €10,816.

The Department says it recognises the importance of ensuring public money is spent transparently.

Taoiseach Simon Harris has issued a strong statement:

"Everybody can see the benefit in having somewhere to park a bike in a workplace. People get that. What they don't get is the extraordinary sum of money that this has cost and I don't either quite frankly. I think it is inexcusable and inexplicable."

Taoiseach Harris also said that "I think it's very important that public money is very carefully spent."

A spokesperson for the OPW said "the bicycle shelter is a new structure located within the setting of Leinster House, a protected structure of national importance."
