The 'Information Kiosk' on Broad Street in the City Centre is no more.
The structure, which had become known as the 'car wash', was removed earlier this week.
It had been intended as an information point about events around the City, but quickly became obsolete thanks to the roll out of WiFi services.
Fianna Fail Councillor Eddie Mulligan says it had become an eyesore: "It was becoming an area where young people would gather, people would park motorbikes underneath it, it had no real function."
He added that the banners were "never kept up to date, it was costing a considerable amount of money to keep them updated, last year they were only updated twice in the whole 12 months".
Councillor Mulligan says there are plans to develop the space: "The intention is to replace it with a little bit of open space and upgrade the seating on either side of it and it will be an area for outdoor activities such as performances". He added that it will "help extend the facilities available for casual traders in addition to allowing a greater area for footfall passing."
He says they received submissions about providing extra parking and he intends to put that forward to the Council department for consideration.
