The Waterford Deputy is calling for immediate Covid swab testing to be conducted on incoming passengers at Dublin and other Airports.
It comes as a number of flights from the US are scheduled to land in Ireland over the coming days.
Independent TD Matt Shanahan says that the absence of testing could pave the way for a second wave of the virus.
"We have to recognise that people are potentially flying into Ireland from countries with high levels of Covid. We're trying to keep it suppressed here at present, but that will be made more difficult if we're allowing people into the country without being tested, especially when it seems likely that less than 40 percent of people are observing quarantine after they fly in here. "
Deputy Shanahan believes that testing at airports would be a far easier solution for the government than trying to deal with issues down the road, like finding additional bed capacity and extra healthcare workers in hospitals. He says we should try "hit the problem at source."
