A Waterford Councillor has called cobblelock or cobblestone paving 'an insurance risk' for the local authority.
Fianna Fáil's James Tobin says the streets lead to a major risk of people falling and it is an issue that councils across the country are dealing with.
Speaking at this month's Plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council the West Waterford local representative said they are a danger to the public.
"I don't know whether you will agree with me, but I think cobblelock footpaths are an insurance risk.
"I have seen more ladies in high-heels falling on them, the heel goes down in between the stones."
"It is an insurance risk for any county council," the Fianna Dáil Cllr said.
In response, Director of Services with Waterford Council Fergus Galvin said the issue is with the cobblelock comes down to its maintenance.
"Cobblelock when it's laid properly maintained properly and not subject to traffic such as parking - especially heavy vehicles - is quite an acceptable solution for footpaths.
"It is the ongoing maintenance that becomes an issue though, and particularly when they are subjected to unintended traffic when people parking on them and otherwise," Galvin said.
