Over one hundred people gathered in Dungarvan last night to call for more special school places in the town. Some 20 children have been put on waiting lists for St. John's Special School.
A draw took place for the eight places the school has available this September, overseen by a local Garda Superintendent.
As September approaches, families say more needs to be done to secure their children's education, particularly in special school places.
Rebecca Meehan's Son remains without a place in September and has been one of the main advocates in the campaign to secure more school places in the town.
Speaking at the demonstration last night, she says more needs to be done.
"The community in Dungarvan is just unlike any other and we're just delighted tonight to have the support of the people behind us so that our children can access their right to an education.
"Everybody's trying their best. This is a capacity issue and it is unfortunate. It's not something that happened today or yesterday but we need to look to the future now and look at resolving this so that this will never happen again. Planning towards the future and a new greenfield site for Dungarvan for St John's Special School is our priority."
Local TD Conor McGuinness was present at the demonstration and said Dungarvan has truly spoken.
"Huge credit to the parents of the children involved. There are 20 families here who were left reeling a couple of weeks ago when they got the news that their children wouldn't be able to avail of a space in St John's Special School. This is a fantastic school, embedded in the community here with an excellent level of care and education catering to children with mild, moderate, and severe additional needs."
