There was a 60 per cent spike in the number of recorded Covid-19 cases in Ireland in the past week.
It has led to a sharp increase in hospital admissions.
The disease was seen to be more prevalent in the older age groups with the over-65s accounting for more than half of confirmed cases.
Kingston Mills, Professor of Experimental Immunology at Trinity College Dubli,n said despite the increase we should not be overly concerned
"The ICU cases are very low so it's much milder than it has been," he said.
"The latest variants have evolved to be more infectious but do not cause as much severe disease as the earlier variants."
