A Senior Engineer with the South East Energy Agency says every single one of us has a role to play to save energy.

The agency, which was launched in Waterford City recently, works to deliver energy saving projects for local authorities, communities and individuals across the South East.

Alex Hamilton, speaking earlier on Déise Today, says its up to all of us to make small changes.

"It's up to all of us individually to make that small change and then we will all make a bigger impact," she said.

The first step in saving energy is to undertake an Energy Audit.

Alex says that you need to know where you are using your energy because if you don't know where you're using your energy, you won't know how to save it.

As well as saving energy, Alex gives tips on how to save money.

If you've had a smart meter installed, you should get to know your meter and the tariffs available for it.

Smart meters can help us change how we use our energy.

"The aim of a smart meter is to help us to change our behavior and to use energy at a cheaper rate," she said.

There is still a lot of work to do with energy saving and we still need to monitor our energy use, even though the government is offering supports to help with the cost of energy this winter.

Alex hopes people do not stop thinking about their use given the supports being provided by the government this winter.

She recommends speaking with your energy provider in order to understand what times are more expensive.

Once you know this, you can change your behavior accordingly, saving yourself money and energy.
