Renowned horse trainer Harry de Bromhead has passed away.
The Butlerstown man, father to Cheltenham Gold Cup winning trainer Henry, trained from the family yard in Knockeen.
Harry is fondly remembered in Waterford for training Fissure Seal, winner of the 1993 Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival, whilst also winning a number of other Graded races.
He also trained Grand Habit to victory in the 1992 Thyestes Chase, and Bishops Hall, winner of the 1996 Kerry National. Harry passed the baton onto his son Henry on January 1, 2000 at his local track Tramore - when he would go on to train the first of hundreds of winners.
Outside of racing, Harry owned Downes Bar on Thomas Street in Waterford City, in partnership with his late brother, Johnny.
Tramore Racecourse have been among those to pay tribute to Harry this evening, describing him as a “fantastic trainer, a true gentleman, and a great friend.”
May he rest in peace.
