Green Party formally select Waterford candidate for next General Election

Waterford Green Party TD Marc O Cathasaigh has been formally declared the party’s sole candidate for the next General Election in the constituency.

Party leader Minister Roderic O’Gorman attended a local party event at The Granville Hotel this evening at which Deputy O Cathasaigh was officially declared as a candidate by the membership.

The announcement follows a previous selection convention.

Speaking to WLR, Minister O’Gorman said the party is strong in terms of membership in Waterford but admitted the local election results were “disappointing” - as was the loss of MEP Grace O’Sullivan’s seat.

However, he said he’s optimistic for the party’s prospects ahead of the General Election.

“I’ve been speaking to people about what we have delivered,” he said.

“We went into the 2020 General Election with a manifesto and we negotiated it into the programme for government and we delivered.”

The Minister added that there is “a risk of going into government”.

“That risk is about delivering and changing policies,” he said.

Deputy O Cathasaigh was first elected as a councillor for Tramore-City West in 2019 and won a Dail seat for the Green Party in the General Election of 2020.
