The Taoiseach has ruled out a pre-Christmas general election.

It's understood Leo Varadkar told Fine Gael Ministers this morning that he won't go to the polls before the end of the year.

Pressure had been building on Mr Varadkar to make a dash to the polls while there was a window in the Brexit process with the UK heading for a Christmas election.

It's believed May 2020 remains the date the Taoiseach wants.
