Gardai in Waterford say they've noticed more people taking unnecessary journeys in recent days.

They're appealing to people to continue to obey the social distancing regulations.

Inspector Gavin Hegarty describes what they're seeing:

"A lot more movement of vehicles on our roads, a lot more people going for what we would deem to be really not essential journeys, people are pushing the boundaries as to what an essential journey is.

"We're seeing people go to the shops several times a day, we're seeing people taking bus trips; we took people off a bus today that were travelling from Waterford to Cork, just to go to Cork for the day. Had no legitimate reason to go to Cork outside of boredom."

He says it's concerning:

"We're rather fearful that those consequences might come to fruition if people really don't start reevaluating what they're doing and start complying with the regulations as they're set out by Government.

"It's really, really important that we go back where we were a week ago where people were being really compliant. They were adhering to social distancing, they weren't going 2km from home, and we're starting to see a little bit of fraying at the edges and it's something that's really concerning to us."
