Garda Covid checkpoints may make a return tomorrow as the Government promises to step up Covid-19 enforcement measures.
Funding for Garda overtime has been secured as the whole country is placed under Level Three restrictions.
Speaking last night, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly did not give an exact figure as to how much money would be provided for Garda overtime but assured they would not be left wanting.
Gardaí say the funding is welcome as policing Covid restrictions will put a strain on resources, particularly as crime levels, which decreased during the lockdown, have returned to normal.
Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) general secretary Antoinette Cunningham has called for clarity on the Taoiseach’s comments to “step up measures to increase compliance with guidelines."
"From midnight tonight we are supposed to step up to the policing of Level Three but regrettably at this point in time, we don't know what additional enforcement measures, if any, will be given to An Garda Síochána."
President of the GRA Jim Mulligan outlines what he expects the measures which come into effect from midnight will look like.
"We are assuming that there will be some move towards the previous level of checkpoints and checking on business premises. It's a bit more difficult for our members now because they do have to deal with the normal state policing."
Later this afternoon the Garda Commissioner will outline how An Garda Síochána will concentrate its frontline resources to support communities as the country enters Level Three.
