Sinn Féin Councillor John Hearne says Waterford Council has written to the Transport Minister to call for legislation to ban sulky racing on public roads:

"Time and time again we've said it's absolutely deadly dangerous that a half tonne animal is left out on the same road as any cars. If a horse spooks and gets afraid, it will cause a casualty some time and it has caused fatalities in the past. We need to regulate it; we need to get it off the roads. It's cruel to the horses, it's dangerous to the people on the back of the horses, if they had hit a civilian you could be talking about a death."
