Damien Tiernan:

Gardai in Waterford are investigating what they believe is a targeted attack on a car belonging to a government Minister. The incident happened in the Barker Street area of Waterford City this afternoon.

Gardaí received a call this afternoon that criminal damage was caused to a car that was parked near Ballybricken. It’s understood the car was parked there at 11 am and was discovered at 1 pm to have been damaged.

The car had one of its tyres slashed and punctured, possibly with a knife or a screwdriver.  No other cars in the area were damaged. It’s been confirmed that the car belongs to Minister of State Mary Butler.

It’s her car and she had parked there before walking to nearby O’Connell Street, where she was speaking at a National Women’s Day event against racism.

The Fianna Fail TD has spoken out before about threats politicians and their staff have received over the past year in particular.

Gardai are investigating the incident and are checking CCTV footage in the area.

It's understood they believe the car was targeted because of who it belonged to.
