GAA suspend all club action with immediate effect

All GAA club games at all levels have been suspended with immediate effect.

The GAA’s Management Committee says the decision has been taken in the interest of public safety following a number of incidents that have been brought to its attention in recent days.

In a statement it says in particular, post-match celebrations and a lack of social distancing at certain events have proved disappointing and problematic.

The directive applies to all ages and all grades across the island.

Club Social Centers/bars are also to close.

The GAA will continue to monitor the situation in the coming days and weeks, regarding changes in government guidelines.

The statement said: “The GAA’s Management Committee has today endorsed a decision to suspend all GAA Club games at all levels with immediate effect and until further notice.

“The decision has been taken in the interest of public safety following a number of incidents that have been brought to our attention in recent days. In particular, post-match celebrations and a lack of social distancing at certain events have proved disappointing and problematic.

Meanwhile, inter-county activity for the moment can continued but major doubts now hang over the Championships which are due to commence later this month.

And if inter-county games do go ahead it now seems almost certain they will be played out behind closed doors.

There was widespread surprise last night when it emerged that the National Public Health Emergency Team were advising that the Government move to Level 5 of the recovery plan.

No sport fixtures or training would be allowed under that Level 5 category.

The GAA's Covid-19 Advisory Group is likely to meet this evening, following the outcome of today's meeting between the Chief Medical Officer and the three Government party leaders, as well as the meeting of cabinet.

Waterford Co. Board Chairman Sean Michael O' Regan will feature on this evening's "On The Ball" from 6:10 pm, he gave his reaction to Gavin Whelan this afternoon.
