Fine Gael Councillor Pat Nugent has raised the concept of St Declan's Way being further linked to the world renowned Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage Walk.
Saint Declan’s Way is a pilgrim walking route linking Cashel in County Tipperary and Ardmore in County Waterford.
The route was approved by Sport Ireland in July 2021 as a waymarked long-distance walking trail.
Starting in Cashel, pilgrims will pass through Melleray, Lismore, Cappoquin and Aglish before reaching their ultimate destination, Ardmore.
Councillor Nugent raised the matter at the most recent Waterford City and County Council Plenary Meeting.
Waterford Council have said it may be looked into in the coming years.
Cllr Nugent stated it is a project with 'huge potential'.
"It's a concept between Tipperary County Council and Waterford City and County Council with huge potential because they are linking it with the Camino."
Waterford Council are enthusiastic as to the possibilities of the endeavour but currently do not have the capability to accelerate the project, according to Director of Services, Michael Quinn.
"We'd certainly see that as a project that has great potential. We currently don't have the resources to direct towards it," he said.
"But it's certainly one we would look to see if that's something that we can incorporate into our work programme over the next year or two."
