A campaign to revitalise Tallow Church is underway. The nearly two-hundred-year-old structure is in need of repair work, as well as important artwork protection.
The total cost of the project is expected to be in the region of one million euros, with partial funding already being provided by the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.
Former Councillor Mairead Tobin spoke to WLR in Tallow reiterating their calls.
"We started on phase one which is coming in at a rough cost of about €115,000.
"Already from starting the works, we can see this is going to be a major project. We also need to make sure that the work that we're doing and the money we're going to be spending is going to last for a lifetime.
"This is a huge project and we understand that people are struggling financially, but it's very important that we maintain the structure."
"The survey that was done was funded by the diocese and by the bishop's office in Waterford and cost €30,000, so it'll tell you of the amount of work that we're dealing with.
"We've been given a rounded figure of up to a million euros for works to be carried out, a million, and that is rising."
Unearthing issues.
"When you go at it you'll discover more issues that will arise. We have a building that's 200 years old.
"You can walk into the church here in Tallow. On either side of the altar, there are two frescoes that were done by painters that were sent from Rome. Go back now and think people came here almost 200 years ago to do these works.
"These paintings are unfortunately being damaged by outside factors, that being leaks and dampness."
