The Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government has agreed to fund the relocation of Waterford train station.
Local Oireachtas members confirmed the news following a meeting with Minister Eoghan Murphy this morning.
Under the plans, a new train station will be built to replace the existing Plunkett Station with a new bus set down area and short-term parking facilities.
The project is part of the North Quays redevelopment.
Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane broke the news on Deise Today:
"Eoghan Murphy said his Department will fund the full allocation which is €39 million. It's great news; it's great news for Waterford. Obviously we've been pushing for this collectively for some time. I know Minister Halligan has been pushing this, the local Oireachtas members have been pushing it, and I just think it's great news for Waterford to get this over the line."
Minister John Halligan says talks are ongoing:
"Negotiations are taking place at present with the Department of Transport and Paschal O'Donohue's department but it has now been confirmed that the money will be made available to move the train station, which is a big, big plus and a big move for the further development of the North Quays."
