Fleadh Cheoil na nDéise to take place across next two days

Fleadh Cheoil na nDéise takes place over the next two days.

Hundreds will take part in dancing and traditional music competitions, with the Waterford winners going forward to the Munster Fleadh Cheoil in Tralee in July.

The dancing competitions take place in Ballyduff Upper this evening, while the music and singing competitions take place in Coolnasmear on Saturday.

There was great success for Waterford last year, as Taobh Na Mara became the first Deise Ceili group to win an All-Ireland title.

County Secretary Valerie O'Gorman told WLR's Micheal O Drisleain that preparations are well underway, and it's set to be an exciting weekend on the local music front.

"It's busy at the minute, just trying to get everything organised", she said. "So far, so good. We're getting there - adjudication sheets, envelopes and medals everywhere! It'll be grand. We've the dancing on Friday night. The numbers are up this year, thankfully. They actually have doubled! On Saturday, we have the music. That's going to be on in the school and the hall in Coolnasmear."

Valerie says Taobh Nua's All-Ireland success last year was a huge boost for Waterford.

"It's been huge - Taobh Na Mara winning. It's the first time that a Ceili band coming out of West Waterford has ever won an All-Ireland, and it was a huge bonus to have them as All-Ireland winners. The previous year they came second. We were hoping last year that they'd be coming home in the top three, but for them to win the All-Ireland, it was phenomenal."

The dancing element of the competition will begin this evening in Coolnasmear Hall from 6.30pm. It's hoped that element of the competition will be concluded by 10pm.

The music element begins at 10am on Saturday morning with a full day of competition.

"We wish everyone all the best and hope they all perform and come away happy", said O'Gorman.
