A fisherman has died and a major search is taking place for a second man after a boat sank last night off the south-east coast.
Gardaí confirmed that a man in his 60s, who was recovered by the emergency services from the water in the early hours this morning, died at University Hospital Waterford.
The alarm was raised at around 10:30pm when the trawler got into difficulty south of Hook Head.
Lifeboats from Dunmore east and Kilmore Quay and the Rescue 117 helicopter were tasked and a man in his 60s was recovered.
He was taken to hospital but has since passed away.
The RNLI, Coast Guard, Navy and local fishing vessels are all involved in the search for the second man.
Coast Guard spokesperson, Gerard O'Flynn, says the area the boat went down is a common fishing ground.
He says the scallop-fishing trawler is owned by a fishing- family in the south-east.
