FINE Gael has unveiled the three candidates who will contest next year's local elections in the Dungarvan electoral area for the party.
In 2019 Fine Gael came within 50 votes of winning a third seat and the party are hoping their team can deliver an additional seat in next June’s local elections.
Long-standing Councillor Damien Geoghegan, who was first elected to Waterford County Council in 2004, was selected by members as one of the three runners for the area which stretches from the Dungarvan side of Lemybrien to Youghal Bridge, and includes areas like Ardmore, Clashmore, Kinsalebeg, An Rinn, Dungarvan, Abbeyside and Ballinroad.
Cllr. Geoghegan has vast experience having served as Cathaoirleach of the Dungarvan area on a number of occasions; as Mayor of Waterford City and County Council in 2020 and as Mayor of Waterford County Council in 2013.
Also seeking re-election in 2024 is current Cathaoirleach of the Dungarvan Lismore Municipal District Councillor Pat Nugent, who was also first elected to Waterford County Council in 2004 and served a very successful term as Mayor of Waterford City and County Council in 2017.
Joining the Dungarvan electoral area team is first-time candidate Monica Murphy. Mrs Murphy is the owner of Monere Development Services, a small business which operates from Cappoquin and provides customised training and development solutions for companies across Ireland. She is looking forward to getting out and about and meeting as many people as possible across the constituency ahead of next June’s local election.
Speaking after the well-attended selection convention in the Park Hotel, Waterford Fine Gael Senator John Cummins said:
“I want to wish the three candidates the very best of luck in the upcoming local elections. Over the past three years, we have built a very strong and united team in Waterford, one which is delivering for people on the ground in every community across our city and county”.
He concluded by saying: “It is especially great to see Monica joining two highly experienced councillors in Pat and Damien on the ticket for Fine Gael. Local democracy is so important and it takes courage to put your hand up and say that you want to do good and work to the best of your ability to represent the people of your area. I genuinely commend every person, cross-party and none who will contest next year's election”.
