Fianna Fail will tonight decide who will represent the party in Waterford in the next General Election.
The party is holding its selection convention at Lawlor's Hotel in Dungarvan from 7.00pm.
It will be chaired by the Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Communications, Climate Action and Environment, and TD for Clare, Timmy Dooley.
One candidate will be selected tonight. Waterford City based Councillor Eamon Quinlan is going up against sitting TD Mary Butler.
Councillor Quinlan told WLR News that "there's an overwhelming consensus among members that two candidates should run in Waterford." He feels that if he is successful he would "expect that our national constituency committees would add Deputy Butler immediately"
Two other City based Councillors Eddie Mulligan and Jason Murphy were also nominated for selection however they withdrew in recent days when it emerged that just one candidate would be selected tonight.
Councillor Murphy says he will be supporting Deputy Butler tonight. "I think she has been a fantastic TD for Waterford, she's very capable, very energetic, I work closely with Mary and she's a person of the highest integrity". Councillor Murphy added that he's not putting his political career on hold: "My ambitions would be to be on a ticket with Mary on some future date and to represent the people of Waterford City and County."
