The construction of Ferrybank Neighbourhood Park has commenced.
The turning of the sod took place today by Minister John Paul Phelan.
The contract for the construction of the public park has been awarded to Tom Beckett Landscaping Limited.
It will include a children's playground, a walking route, a teenager meeting point, and a playing pitch.
The projected completion date is January 2020.
Minister Phelan says it's been a long time coming:
"This is a battle that has gone on for several years. In fact, there's been different incarnations; there was other sites that in some cases, for reasons of local objection, never got off the ground.
"Finally, through a combination of funds from Kilkenny County Council and from the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, work is literally about to start on the development of what will be the area park for the greater Ferrybank area."
