Waterford City & County Council have announced they will open a temporary second lane for traffic in Ferrybank.

As part of the North Quays Public Infrastructure contract, Bam is currently carrying out works at Abbey Road and at the Abbey Road/ Fountain Street junction.

Amid significant traffic delays, and with the issue being raised multiple times by local councillors during meetings, a statement has been issued by the Council.

A spokesperson for Waterford City & County Council as said:

"We recognise these works are causing disruption and inconvenience for local residents and commuters but every effort is being made to limit the disruption and ensure the safety of all concerned.  The situation is continually monitored and to help ease traffic movement, from mid-February until June 2024, a second lane from Abbey Road onto Fountain Street will temporarily be opened.

We appreciate your continued patience and cooperation while this extensive infrastructure project progresses, when works are complete it will deliver a new realigned section of Abbey Road with increased capacity, while the footprint of the existing Abbey Road will be recreated to a cycle and pedestrian friendly local road access for the schools and nursing home located on this section of the road."

As part of the works, a direct access to the new South East Greenway will also be created.
