The government says there will be a "cheque in the post" for all Irish water customers with repayments for the water tax complete by the end of the year.
An online portal will be launched for Irish water account holders to check the status of their payment and most households won't have to do anything.
However those who've moved home will have to get in touch.
Minister Eoghan Murphy says an effective system has been put in place, " you don't have to do anything unless your circumstances have changed, if you've moved address you will need to get in touch with Irish Water. They'll be commencing an information campaign very shortly that will run over a number of weeks to let people know if they're worried about their circumstances changing, if they're worried about not getting the cheque to the right address to get in touch with them. But if your circumstances haven't changed, if you haven't changed address then the cheque will come to you in the post as quickly as possible."
