Party leader Nicola Sturgeon says the "mandate to give people a choice must be respected".
Political expert Professor James Mitchell says there are potential consequences for the British Prime Minister.
"The relationship between Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom will deteriorate. It's likely that Scottish support for independence will rise. The prime Minister may be in a much stronger position constitutionally but the politics of this is very dangerous for him," he said.
