Extra college places may be provided, to make up for two errors in the Leaving Cert calculated grades.
The mistakes are being put down to a "coding error" in how the results are calculated, which was uncovered by an American firm doing an independent assessment.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed that errors had been identified this afternoon.
The Taoiseach said a full statement will be issued from the Department of Education in relation to the matter later today.
“The Department of Education and Skills has found... two errors in the Leaving Certificate 2020 calculated grades,” he said.
“My understanding is that the Minister for Education will be making a comprehensive statement today in relation to this and in terms of both what has occurred, the measures taken to rectify that.”
Around 6,000 or 10 per cent of students who sat the exams will be impacted with many of those having their grades revised up.
This may lead to them getting places on courses they initially missed out on - but it's unclear if they will be able to start those this academic year.
A press conference has been called for 4 o'clock to explain things.
