The Emergency Department at University Hospital Waterford is in what has been described a precarious situation at the moment.
Last night the Hospital issued a statement saying they were experiencing extraordinary demand on its Emergency Department services.
Dr Mark Doyle, Consultant in Emergency Medicine says the department became critically overcrowded last night.
He says currently there are 23 patients in the emergency department who are awaiting inpatient beds. They did get a good few discharges yesterday. He says it's a very challenging situation.
Dr. Doyle says things have eased today but they are still in a fairly precarious situation.
He says to ensure that the service is fully available to those most in need of emergency medical care, the public should make full use of GP and Primary Care services.
