Planning permission has been granted for an Islamic Centre in Dungarvan.

An application was submitted by Dungarvan Islamic Centre CLG to Waterford City and County Council on October 16th -  for a change of use of a unit at the Kilrush Industrial Estate.

Conditional planning permission has been granted for the conversion of an existing industrial unit to a place of worship.

The plans will see the addition of window and door opes and rooflight windows and alteration of existing opes and the replacement of existing external wall cladding with plastered blockwork.

Planning permission was granted by the local authority on November 28th - subject to five conditions.

No submissions or objections were received.

In a cover letter, the applicants noted that an average of 10 people will frequent the premises on a daily basis, there is a prayer meeting every Friday with between 30-40 people in attendance.

5 parking spaces will be allocated opposite the subject property.

It is contended that the development would be akin to a standard semi-detached house.

Among the conditions attached to the planning permission are:

There shall be no calling to prayer or other public address system externally on the site, in the interest of the preservation of the amenities of the area.

Details of any external signage shall be submitted to, and agreed in writing with, the planning authority prior to the commencement of development.

No development can commence until such time as the developer has obtained a Connection Agreement from Irish Water for the provision of water services necessary to enable the proposed development.
