Waterford Council has had to launch a Special Protection Area clean-up operation after an extensive amount of rubbish was dumped over the cliff at Benvoy, Annestown last week.
People in Waterford are being warned to dispose of their waste responsibly and to use authorised waste collectors.
The clean-up involved the assistance of contractors trained in working at heights.
CLEAN UP AT BENVOY
Following a recent illegal dumping incident #Waterford Council cleaned up extensive rubbish dumped over a cliff at Benvoy. It is obvious that the waste didn’t come from one house. Always check your waste collectors permit and get a receipt! pic.twitter.com/N2p7mVS4SF— Waterford Council (@WaterfordCounci) September 26, 2019
The dumping took place within the UNESCO Global Geopark.
Local Councillor John O'Leary says it's believed it was the work of an illegal waste collector:
"It was a shed clean out or a garage clean out because what was dumped there was televisions, mattresses and household furniture. There are people who are illegally removing rubbish for people, they advertise by way of social media, and they're willing to put the scenery of our county at risk.
"It behooves everybody who's getting rubbish removed or taken away by somebody for them that they check they have a permit to do so."
