Donald Trump has banned transgender women from competing in female categories of sport.
He's signed an executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” which will largely cover high schools, universities, and grassroots sports.
Republicans say it restores fairness to sports.
President Trump says there will be consequences for those not adhering to the new order.
"With this executive order, the war on women's sports is over. With my action this afternoon, we're putting every school receiving taxpayer dollars on notice that if you let men take over women's sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated for violations and risk your federal funding.
Ahead of signing the order, Mr Trump said: "From now on women's sports will be only for women.
"We've gotten the woke lunacy out of our military and now we're getting it out of women's sports."
