New rules are being introduced today to protect cyclists, including fines for dangerous overtaking.
Drivers who are caught dangerously overtaking cyclists will be given 3 penalty points and fined €120.
Gardaí will begin enforcing the new laws from midnight.
In 2018, nine cyclists were killed on Irish roads.
Cycling advocates have criticised the measures saying they are a token gesture which will not improve road safety.
But Transport Minister Shane Ross disagrees, and says it's just the start of the Government's plans to improve conditions for cyclists:
"Today is a great day for cyclists. It's a great day because we've introduced this particular measure and it's about road safety and it's about saving lives. And we're doing as much as we possibly can to save cyclists' lives because tragedies have happened. Apart from this very important measure, we're also putting much more money into cycling this year and next year."
