Tens of thousands of people have had their Covid-19 test cancelled.

It's after new criteria for testing was announced last night.

From today, people will only be put forward for a test if they have a fever and coughing or breathlessness.

They must also be either contacts of a confirmed case, healthcare staff or in an at risk group.

Patients who have been given an appointment for a test will still be swabbed but people who were still waiting for an appointment have had their tests cancelled.

18,000 coronavirus tests have been carried out across Ireland with 94% of those tests coming back negative.

There have been 20,000 requests a day for a test, resulting in a massive backlog and as a result priority testing has been implemented.

The new criteria means that tens of thousands of people who were waiting on a test will now not get one.

People who are still displaying symptoms need to contact their GP again to see if they qualify for a test.

The advice to those people is to self isolate for 14 days from when they first had symptoms.

Waterford GP, Dr Geoff Plant, is from the Keogh Practice:

"If you have no fever and you're reasonably well in yourself, you must keep yourself self isolated for two weeks from when you are unwell and you need to be five days fever free - that's one category. The second category is if you still have a fever and you still are quite unwell you need to ring your GP to see if you need to be tested still."
